On-Rails Shooter Project - Week #1 - Research & Planning


I have never tackled developing a rail shooter before however from playing them myself I know that the player interacting with the game has very little agency on the events taking place on screen and the speed at which the game moves through those events. This is part of what interests me when tackling this project as there will be less opportunity for the player to screw up camera angles or scripted events however the caveat of this is that I will be responsible for every moment of gameplay the player sees.

My preferred method of planning is to create a new Trello board for this project then start adding features I intend to include as "Cards" and use both "Labels" to mark them as more difficult (red) or less difficult (green) to implement, and, multiple "Lists" to further organise the board into categories such as "Priority"/"Additional"/"Done" features.

Doing some quick googling I found a tutorial series on YouTube showing me how to script moving the player around without enabling a player controller and how to rotate the player character to look in the directions I wish to specify.

  Guest - Peter Dimitrov, Environment Artist @ Rebellion Games Guest Bio Peter enlightened us and told us his day-to-day while he worked on the 1st DLC project for Sniper Elite 5, as a environment artist Peter worked with another level designer to develop and refine the flooded map level that the 2 of them had been assigned to.  Takeaway #1 - Working with limitations      Both Peter and his co-worker had to stick to a schedule where sections of the map needed to be                   done to a specific deadline, the white box version needed to be done within a certain time limit,                   changes could not be made once the art pass had started, the map needed to include certain features like      ditches and a spot for a supply train to run through.
